Last night’s Halloween episode of ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars was — as has come to be the norm with this dark-and-twisty show — rather explosive. Well, not literally explosive — although that wouldn’t be out of the realm for this drama. But so much happened when our Pretty Little Liars foursome — Aria, Spencer, Hannah, and Emily — jumped on that Halloween night Ghost Train with (most of) the rest of Rosewood. And Adam Lambert. Yes, Adam Lambert was there, too! He performed two songs, which were actually pretty fun to watch.
And despite the photo attached here where Hannah looks like she’s smiling, that’s not the reaction I think most people would have from watching the episode. No smiles after the deadly episode! My major response was: Huh? So many questions! (Again, not shocking with this show.)
Questions like: Who killed Garrett? Who is the Queen of Hearts? Was that Alison’s body in the ice chest? Was that creepy little girl the same one from last year’s Halloween episode? Whose hand popped out of the ground? And, rather importantly: Could Ezra be on the “A” team? All those questions are why I thought it best to react to the hour by dissecting (or trying to dissect!) some of the biggest burning questions from last night’s episode:
WHO KILLED GARRETT?
That’s a tricky question, right? The obvious answer would be “A,” but these days, that could be a number of people. First culprit is Mona — who it seems was there dressed in a costume nearly the same as what Caleb was wearing. (Right? That was her getting a little frisky with Hannah there in that one particular scene?) Or it could have been Toby, who seemed to disappear during much of the high drama of the evening. Or the Joker-looking Queen of Hearts person who drugged Aria and stuffed her in a box with Garrett’s body? All possibilities. Bet you we won’t find out for a while.
WHO IS THE QUEEN OF HEARTS?
Last season, we saw Mona singing a song with the Queen of Hearts card in her hand in an episode, and this time, the Joker-esque Queen of Hearts came to life. Who was in that costume? Who was it wearing those big talons as fingernails? (We saw the girls retrieve one of those fingernails.) Will we see her again? What did she use to drug Aria? So many questions! And, sadly, so few answers at this point.
WAS THAT ALISON’S BODY IN THE ICE CHEST?
I think we’re supposed to believe that. But I heard there was some rumblings on Twitter that it could have also been Maya’s body, which in my opinion doesn’t seem likely. With the Byron-Alison storyline coming to a head soon (Garrett’s big reveal!), I think we have to assume that Alison’s remains have returned. But then again, with Pretty Little Liars, it’s impossible to assume anything.
WAS THE CREEPY LITTLE GIRL WITH HANNAH’S MOM THE SAME ONE FROM LAST YEAR’S HALLOWEEN EPISODE?
Yep, that was a clever little nod to last year’s Halloween episode. The storyline as a whole didn’t really go anywhere, but it was fun to watch, and hey, Laura Leighton, who plays Hannah’s mom Ashley, looked smashing as a nurse! She could easily have hung with her daughter and friends, who also looked just divine in their Halloween costumes.
WHOSE HAND POPPED OUT OF THE GROUND?
The tag at the end of the episode showed the dug-up plot in Alison’s backyard with a hand clawing its way to the surface. Someone was buried alive! Again, I’m assuming here — again not a good idea with PLL! — but I think what we’re supposed to take away at this point is that Alison had a second act before she died that fateful night, which launched the show. She was buried alive, and then resurfaced for another tear through Rosewood before she was actually killed. You know what that means: There’s so much more to the night that she was killed that we don’t know. Garrett made that clear, too, when he revealed what he saw with Alison and Aria’s dad Byron talking in the backyard. Get ready for some good flashbacks in the next season, which launches in January.
COULD EZRA BE ON THE “A” TEAM?
With the way he showed up on the train there at the end, it seems very likely that maybe Ezra could be working with the “A” team. But then again, that’s probably what the show’s producers and writers want us to think. He popped in after all the action with some excuse about how he’d come to find Aria, just about the same time that we saw the resurface of Toby, who we already know is working with “A,” aka Mona (and who knows how many other people!). It seems a big far-fetched to believe that both Ezra and Toby would be working with “A,” but crazier things have happened in Rosewood, right? It’s definitely a possibility.
But what do you think Pretty Little Liars fans? Were you satisfied with the episode? What burning questions do you have about last night’s episode?

[Warning: If you haven't seen Tuesday's Halloween episode, do not read on. Major spoilers.]
Rosewood lost one of its own in Tuesday’s Halloween episode, and the actor behind the character tells all to THR, including who he thinks is next.
In Rosewood, no one is safe.
On Pretty Little Liars’ second Halloween episode, “This is a Dark Ride” (the haunted hour drew 2.8 million viewers), one of its residents bit the dust — and like how everything unfolds on the dark and twisted ABC Family drama, it wasn’t pretty.
“It’s bittersweet for me to leave the show, but I’m happy to be a part of a really cool development in the story,” the actor behind “A’s” latest victim told The Hollywood Reporter the day after the episode aired.
In a chat with THR, they offered some behind-the-scenes intel about when they found out they wouldn’t survive the “A” train and who in Rosewood they think is next.
The Hollywood Reporter: R.I.P. Officer Garrett Reynolds. How did you find out that your character would be the one to bite the dust?
Yani Gellman: [Executive producer] Marlene [King] pulled me aside before the script came out and we sat down and she talked to me about how much she appreciated all of my work on the show. The story was heading in a certain direction and in order for them to get there, my character had to bite the dust. She was really great about it. She talked about how much she loved working with me and how sad she was seeing my character go. But it was a part of the bigger picture. All the actors are very aware of what the show is and how things like this really make it interesting and exciting for the people who watch it.
THR: What were your thoughts on Garrett’s death scene?
Gellman: [Laughs] As a kid, I used to do this thing where I would lay on the stairs pretending to be dead for when my mom came around the corner. That was my earliest performance. I don’t know why I did that but it was very reminscent of that. It was a little terrifying locked in that crate, all painted up to make it look like you weren’t alive anymore. Lucy [Hale] and I had a really good time with it; she emotionally had to be in a dark place and we tried to have fun in between takes.
THR: Were you privy to who was responsible for Garrett’s murder?
Gellman: Well, they gave me a very general sense of how this murder factors into the overall plot [in season 3B]. I don’t really know who killed Garrett, but I have my ideas. And certainly it is part of a bigger plot on the show.
THR: Who are you speculating?
Gellman: I have my ideas as to who it could be, but I always get into trouble when I talk about this stuff so I’ll wait to see how it pans out.
THR: Garrett dropped a bombshell to Spencer (Troian Bellisario), revealing to her that Aria’s father Byron (Chad Lowe) who could have been the one to have seen Alison (Sasha Pieterse) last. How did you react when you first read that scene?
Gellman: Yeah, I was really shocked. Everyone on set was too. I was just happy that my character could play a big part in revealing what this is all about before biting the dust. He didn’t really die in vain. Hopefully this will help track down the culprit behind all this. It’s never what you’re expecting.
THR: Were you following viewer reaction last night while the episode aired?
Gellman: Yeah! [Laughs] One person said, “At least Garrett got to die a free man,” and I thought that was cool. Just taking away something positive from the fact that there’s some kind of nobility in [his actions]. Another person tweeted about how I was in The Lizzie McGuire Movie and I played a bad guy: “Finally, Paolo Valisari from The Lizzie McGuire Movie meets his maker.” Of any show I’ve really been on, this one seems to have the most engaged, wildly excited fanbase and we really do take that energy on-set and I know the writers do too, to push as far as they can get on the show.
THR: Do you think this was the right time for Garrett to die or do you think he could have survived longer?
Gellman: That’s an interesting question. It was explained to me that for the story that’s coming around, it sets up the story in the second half of the season. We’ve seen a couple times that a death really begins a new mystery or investigation so [his death] was pivotal. I think it did my character justice in terms of killing him off the way that they did. Obviously I would always love to work more on the show, but how the character was written and how it played out, I think they did a great job with it.
THR: Possibility of flashbacks?
Gellman: Marlene mentioned to me that there is a lot of backstory that needs to be explained and that my character would figure into that one way or another. Who knows. Maybe I have an evil twin who lives the next city over. [Laughs] In Rosewood, you never know what’s going to happen.
THR: Is there a character on the show who you believe their days are numbered in Rosewood?
Gellman: I don’t know. I think everybody on that show has a target on their back. They’ve done such a remarkable job creating a show where everyone is potentially a victim and also a perpetrator. Everyone has some kind of blood on their hands, and everyone is a huge threat in a way. You never really know who will be next. They’ve got one less cop on the scene to protect the people over there so we’ll see what happens.
THR: What was the most surprising development during the episode for you?
Gellman: I think the twist in this episode, of Byron having been the last person to talk to Ali was pretty monumental. That really surprised me.

Watching the “Pretty Little Liars” Halloween special was just as intense for star Shay Mitchell and her fellow Liars as it was for the audience at home. [Warning: Spoilers ahead!]
“The Halloween episode was very intense and I watched it last night with everybody again,” Mitchell tells Zap2it on the “PLL” set the morning after the fateful episode. Between A being on the train and Garrett dying, there was plenty of awful drama. Plus, finding another dead body is kind of a bummer. “No one likes to have that happen at a party,” Mitchell jokes.
When the show returns for the second half of Season 3 on January 8, 2013, “The girls are going to have to just jump back from this as well, just as the did with the midseason finale,” Mitchell says. It’ll be harder for one of them, though. “One of the girls is really going to hit her breaking point,” Mitchell teases, though she won’t reveal which one.
Plenty of action will be dedicated to figuring out what kind of involvement Toby has in the A team — is he truly bad, or is he protecting Spencer? Even Mitchell doesn’t know. “He plays that character very well, because even I’m like, ‘Is he good? is he bad?’ It will be very interesting if Spencer ever does find out.”
Check out more of what Mitchell had to say about the recent revelations on “PLL,” including what a pleasure it was to work with Adam Lambert and her dream musical guest stars. (Do you think Beyonce would ever find herself in Rosewood?)

James Franco has spoken out about reports he is dating Ashley Benson, saying there is no truth to the rumors.
“I also hear that I’ve been dating Selena Gomez, Kristen Stewart and Ashley Benson. Hot damn, am I a lucky guy,” the 34-year-old actor wrote in a piece for Huffington Post.
“I wish I had actually gotten closer than the 13th row of the theater in Toronto where Kristen gave her On the Road Q and A, but I didn’t; not only did I not talk to her, I didn’t even go to the SoHo house where I supposedly asked her out on a date. As for Gomez and Benson, those are [Justin] Bieber‘s girls and I wouldn’t dare tangle with the Biebs. I heard he wants to kick my ass. Yikes!”
James and Ashley were caught cuddling at Universal Studios Hollywood last week and were also spotted on a romantic stroll in New York City’s Washington Square Park.
